After rescue and recovery efforts were completed in New York City, the opportunity for adopting a piece of the World Trade Center was put out to municipalities across the country. Hutchinson was lucky enough to be selected for a section of I-beam. The Hutchinson Firefighters were tasked with housing the beam.
The beam lived at Fire Station 1 on 18 E. B in Hutchinson for several years, and was taken around the city as a traveling exhibit. For example, to the Kansas State Fair and to Third Thursday, with the intention of raising money for a permanent memorial.
The current memorial was finished in 2013 with the opening of the new Fire Station 7, located at 3416 E. 30th.
My name is Mason Weathers and I am apart of Troop 7303. I have been a Life Scout for about 4 years. For my Eagle Scout Project, I decided to create a website to give history about the Hutchinson 911 Memorial at Fire Station 7. Along with the website, I installed a concrete bench and floral displays.
